Diocletian from Ticinum

(1/2) > >>

Molinari:
Hello Friends,

My students are working on Roman coin attributions and we've found a variety not on Wildwinds or OCRE.  I don't have RIC but I'm wondering if someone can consult it, or let us know if the coin is published somewhere--it would be really cool if this mintmark was unrecorded.

OBV: IMP CC VAL DIOCLETIANVS PF AVG
REV: HERCVLI CONSERVAT

MINTMARK: QX  IT (we find only QXXIT)

I thought perhaps the die was clogged at the second X but it appears to be blank or perhaps a faint dot.

Cf. RIC 212-217.

Molinari:
A better shot of the reverse:

Lech Stępniewski:
RIC V/2 212 QXXIT in exergue (the outline of the second X is still visible)
obverse legend 1
bust type F
fourth officina (all six officinae listed)

shanxi:
I also think that a clogged die is the most probable explanation. On my computer it looks like a faint X.

Molinari:
Thank you--at first I thought perhaps a dot but now I too think I see the outlines of the second, clogged X.

Nick
