Hadrian Denarius Africa contemporary forgery or eastern mint?
« on: December 13, 2017, 10:07:13 am »
Dear cf,

The style made me believe its not eastern since the obverse bust style isn’t seen in eastern mints, what do you think
but then the quality is very good and the legend is typical for eastern mints imho.

Reference
cf RIC 299; Strack --

Laureate head right

Rev. AFRICA
Africa reclining left, wearing elephant-skin headdress and holding scorpion and cornucopia, basket of fruits at her feet

I am inclined to regard the coin as Eastern.

To confirm the attribution, one would like to find another coin combining the same obv. die with another, typically Eastern, rev. type.

Since they use a Roman denomination and copy Roman types, I think Hadrian's Eastern denarii should be discussed under Roman Coins rather than Roman Provincial Coins.
