unknown circular fibula/brooch
« on: November 06, 2016, 05:43:18 pm »
Hi all, I bought this a while ago, the seller couldn't say anything about it. Other than the fact that it looks to be old, I don't know anything about it.
It's 32 mm across, weighs 12.5 g and shows no signs of having been enameled or similar*, the needle looks original (to me) and moves.

I'd be grateful for any help

Andreas

* looking at these large pictures, I'm not so sure anymore. The red seemed like it was just earth.

I don't know the exact pattern but it does look like an enamelled disc fibula circa 2nd century.  I suspect that the red is the remnants of enamel and that all of the cells were once enamelled.

I think that I can see traces of red/orange in some segments and blue enamel in the center flower pattern, so you brooch might have looked something like this.

It might not be 100% accurate but it amused me to do it.  ;D

Ave Andreas!

What up, dog? LOL

Your plate brooch is similar Hattatt 1064 & 1065. 2nd Cent., for sure.

The real problem with enameled brooches such as yours is that the diggers don't understand what they are cleaning when fresh from the ground, y'know? It looks all dirty and they start cleaning and scraping down to the metal, without understanding they are removing the enameling.

Here's my version of your plate brooch.... Don't scoff.

And a few photos of enameled brooches from cleaners who knew exactly what they were cleaning.

Best regards,

Kevin
