Love your find and Nicomedia is indeed scarcer than say Arles, Lyons or Sirmium.

Vincent,

Typo, I think you meant RIC VIII 40 (R2, specimens in BM and Vienna), Cohen 340 (6 fr., citing SMN mintmark from Vienna coll.).

I don't like wreath and especially object on top of wreath, everything is too good to be true. Although, I admit it looks better cleaned.

Check against recent auction of EF example http://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=1996108

I can see why Marcus would be a little upset- he's sharing an impressive find that he is excited about and someone questions that it is a forgery, implying he is a lowlife.

I'd be upset too, especially given that no reason is provided beyond 'too good to be true'. If so, most of us must have our share of blatant fakes!

Too good to be true is NEVER a good reason to give for a coin being fake. You must be specific about what exactly is better than you expect. What about the original genuine type is not normally this good? Excellent condition is not a valid indicator of a fake unless the type was struck with some alloy that precludes it. Your post makes no sense to me at all. Your link to the auction makes no sense to me at all. You want him to compare to that single example, why?

Also, if you are going to say a coin looks fake when someone has just posted, with obvious pride, that they just found it metal detecting, you should have some very solid reasons. It is not a nice thing to do.

I was talking about the coin as this is the coin discussion forum, not about the poster of course. I have my doubts, but should have kept silent.
Since this turned into personal before any other posts, I would not mind sharing my other thoughts via private messages if anyone else is interested in this matter. Pro or contra, of course.
I offer my sincere apologies to OP, and hope he will have many more finds like these.

What amaze me is that i found 5 roman Ae3 coins and one Lucius Verus denarius, all crusty and hard to recognize, but siliqua was so clean and beautiful.

Hi!

It is amazing how many of us take for granted the coins that are out there in the auctions. Do we think the coins appeared there in some mysterious way? or may be got there right from the Ceasar's vault? No, we are all sitting in the comfort of our couches should be at least thankful to all those people who were out there in the fields, regardless was it hundreds years ago or just 2 days ago. Those people dig for solt of the earth, literally, so that we all have a privilege to buy it at some point of time later... and by the way, all those people keep the coins auctions alive and striving for hundreds of years already.

With all respect to Marcus and his fascinating hobby!...great coin, a bit soft on obverse, but still really nice. I think it is in such good condition as it is high quality silver, and it must have avoided fertilizers/pesticides. Lucky coin!

Cheers,

Z.

So can we ask where these coins were found?
