A new Valerian - Dacia variant
« on: August 29, 2008, 11:32:31 am »
Maybe an engraver´s error concerning the year:

Valerian I., Viminacium or Sarmizegetusa (?) mint for Dacia, 253-260 AD.(dated year 5, 250-251 AD.),
Æ Sestertius (28-29 mm / 14,46 g),
Obv.: IMP P LIC VALERIANO A[VG] , laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Valerian right, seen from behind.
Rev.: PROVIN - CIA DAC / AN V (in ex., year 5 = 250-251 AD.) , Dacia standing left, wearing long chiton and Phrygian cap, holding up bundle of rice in her right hand, but nothing in her pointing down left hand; to right of Dacia lion advancing left, to left of Dacia eagle with head turned right, wreath in beak.
Pick (AMNG) - ; Martin - (cf. 7.52.1) .
