Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Domitian As - Temple of Jupiter
« Reply #100 on: November 29, 2013, 01:20:09 pm »
Hello everyone.

Today I've received a coin that I've been hunting for a long time: an As of Domitian as Caesar with the temple of Capitoline Jupiter on reverse.

The coin has a significant wear, but it's still fully readable.

It makes a nice pair with the cistophorus and it would be a fantastic trio with the Vespasian sestertius, if I could ever get one.

Kind regards

Alberto

Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Domitian Ceres dupondius - no photo in RIC
« Reply #103 on: December 03, 2013, 11:31:02 am »
Hello everyone,

today I received a few nice coins in the mail.

I will start updating my gallery with a lovely left portrait dupondius, struck during the reign of Titus. It's a very rare coin also: no picture in RIC last edition.

I've paired it with a right portrait dupondius sharing the same reverse but struck in Thrace.

Kind regards

Alberto

Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Two Alexandria tets and unpublished Domitia

Hello everyone,

three additions on the provincial album today.

Beginning with two Vespasian and Titus tetradrachms from Alexandria; both are nice but the Serapis is something special for me.

Then an unpublished AE23 of Domitia: first coin appearing so far for Calchedon in Bithynia in the Flavian era. It will be included in the next RPC S3 Supplement.

Kind regards

Alberto

Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Vespasian and Domitian - 2 unpublished variants
« Reply #107 on: December 11, 2013, 11:15:48 am »
Hello everyone,

today I've added two new coins, both unpublished so far.

First comes an As of Vespasian, struck toward the end of his reign, with Victory on reverse. Its singularity is the reverse legend: is anticlockwise, outwardly, while the known examples of RIC 1013 has the legend clockwise, inwardly.

Than is a Denarius of Domitian as Caesar under his brother. The reverse is the same as RIC 267, but has a left portrait.

The coin is underweight, yet has a small fracture (8/9 h) that may have caused some loss of metal.

Kind regards

Alberto

Hello everyone,

two new additions today.

First is an early Domitian / Minerva left portrait sestertius. The coin is much scarcer than the right portrait one, has an honest wear and a lovely emerald green patina on a good portrait.

Second is another silver Drachm struck in Rome for circulation in Lycia; I miss only the hemidrachm RPC 1506 to complete this series.

Kind regards

Alberto

Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Vespasian Antiochia - One aureus and two denarii
« Reply #110 on: December 19, 2013, 01:32:19 pm »
Hello everyone.

Today I've added three Vespasian coins struck in the eastern mint of Antiochia ad Orontem.

This mint was active in striking imperial silver and gold only in the early years of his reign, until 73 A.D..

The aureus is worn, yet pretty rare and shows a significant reverse.

Kind regards

Alberto

Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Three PAX Sestertii
« Reply #115 on: December 27, 2013, 03:12:06 pm »
Hello everyone.

Peace after Civil War was the most significant achievement of Vespasian reign and it was largely celebrated in his coinage.

The Templum Pacis (Temple of Peace)  was the most beautiful monument erected by the Flavians, together with the Colosseum (Amphitheatrum Flavium).

In this temple was stored the booty retrieved from the Jewish war.

Perhaps the reverse of this coins show the statue of Peace that was inside the temple.

Happy 2014 to all of you.

Alberto

Hello everyone.

The last coin of the year is an As of Vespasian with VICTORIA NAVALIS on reverse: not rare, but it's the very first issue of the type.

Same reverse for the two other coins that were already in my collection.

Happy 2014 to you all.

Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Three coins added (Domitian and Titus)
« Reply #118 on: January 10, 2014, 10:35:50 am »
Hello everyone,

today I've added two new coins and a reshoot of an old one:

- a rare 85 AD Domitian denarius: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-105566

- a scarce Titus as Caesar dupondius struck in Rome for eastern circulation: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-105565

- a Domitian / Domitia cistophorus, same type as David's: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-105567

I own this coin from a long time (by the way is also plate coin in WW: http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/sear5/s2884.html#RIC_0845). Being obviously plated, i consider it an ancient forgery.

Kind regards

Alberto

Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Scarce Vespasian denarius, nice reverse
« Reply #121 on: January 23, 2014, 11:18:41 am »
Hello everyone.

The last 2013 purchase has been finally delivered today.

It's a nicely toned denarius of Vespasian, whose reverse is a favorite of mine.

It's been also used also by Titus in the series dedicated to his deified father.

The left portrait is much scarcer than the right one.

Kind regards

Alberto

Hello everyone.

Today I received this scarce Titus denarius, struck under Vespasian.

The coin has circulated, but the portrait of Titus is for sure one of the best in my collection.

Kind regards

Alberto
