You've just been given $1000 dollars US. What would you buy?
« on: October 18, 2006, 09:42:02 pm »
Another post on the fake coins forum set me to thinking.
Along the lines of how many coins do you have, if you had $1000 dollars US, to be used for no other purpose except for coin acquisition, what would you buy?
I'm not talking about long lists of coins for $5.00 each, this is cash for your dream coins.
They must be available, not one of a kind unbuyable and commonly for sale even if only one for the $1000.
And to further limit loooong posts of 50 coins in a row, you are allowed to buy only 5. That's five.
Think on it in the days to come.   :o

I'd go with one for sale right here on Forum:

But maybe 1000§ will not be sufficient.

One of the things on my distant wish list is a coin of Croesus.  This one would do nicely.

I would try for a decent Galba or Pupienus Sestertius, with Victory Reverse. For $1000 certainly not a choice VF example, of either but a decent one. These are two I can't afford unless something like this happens ...

my Pupienus Sestertius with victory only costed about $240.  Of course, it's far from VF  ;)

My first coin was a little under a thousand dollars.

The second and third one were about $1500, but you really have to specialize to appreciate them. (post the third in the next post)

Hi Howard, the Augustus Tetradrachm is a wonderful coin. I have one myself though not nearly as nice, antioch issues are addictive.

To answer the $1000 question, I'm going to be a little unoriginal and settle for the best quality Athens Tet (449-404 BC) that I can for that price.

Hi peterpil19,

I really like the early Antioch tetradrachms too and I am slowly starting a collect of them.

I made a mistake on my second coin.  It only cost about $800, but you have to be into Islamic figural bronzes to realize how rare it is.

I'm in this happy position! I've put aside $1,000 and I'm going into Sydney to buy something on the 24th. Don't know what yet- see when I get there. Maybe a few nice things or just one wonderful thing!

Just got back from Sydney with something wonderful. ($1,000 in Australian dollars is about $760 U.S.)

Regards
Steve

Hi Goodies,

You should have. The one you'll buy in 2011 for 2500$ will have a bitter taste...  ;D

I would get one of these, a coin of Arsinoe, wife of Ptolemy 11. Or perhaps put it towards one of the gold ones

After reading Curtis Clay's interesting post regading Domitian denarii, I've been hooked!  I'd buy the following coin:
Domitian, AR Denarius, 81, Second Issue, Rome; Obverse: IMP CAES DOMITIAN AVG PONT Laureate head right; Reverse: TR P COS VII-DES VIII P P, Winged thunderbolt facing left on draped table. 18mm x 19mm, 2.89g RIC II, --

Then I would augment my remaining "gift" money with a little of my own and purchase this coin of his older brother:
TITUS, 79 - 81 AD. Denarius, Rome, 80 AD (3.57 g, 18 mm).  Obverse: Laureate head right; Reverse: dolphin entwined around anchor. Fine toning. RIC 26 b.

I love that second Domitian (with dolphin), Jim!

If I had $1000, I would buy an Elagabalus denarius with Emesa stone reverse.  A nice one goes for around that, I believe.

Hmmm.

I have already been down that road and bought my Philip II tet ($900). I also orginally went for a $1k Athens Tet, but drifted well above that by the time I was done (although ecstatic with what I got).

Unfortunately the coins I REALLY want (Ptolemy I elephant skin/athena tet, and Syracuse Agothokles/quadr tet) are just too darn high to qualify for the $1k mark.

But, to finally address the question,  if I had another $1k and got to choose another coin, I would go with Howard Coles Augustus Cistophoric Tet. Does not fit my Greek interests, but I have been looking at those for over a year and it fits a historical interest.

Love that coin Mr. Cole. Sharp, centered, minor porosity..........real nice coin.

I don't know how much this is worth but I figure that with a thousand bucks, I could afford to seriously consider adopting this work of numismatic art.
