Ancient Greek Coin, Marked 250 B.C.
« on: June 14, 2021, 02:58:06 pm »
My great grandfather's coin collection came into my hands. Most of them aren't really worth anything, but this coin caught my eye because of the date written on the coin holder.

It just says "Greece, 250 BC"

I can't even identify whose face is supposed to be on the front of it. Any ideas?

Hi JB,

The obverse looks like Tyche. The reverse looks like a galley. Those types of coins are usually Phoenician.

Do you know the size or weight?

I don't have anything to weigh it, but the diameter is 0.75 inches, so ~19mm.

One thing to point out too is that the coin has what looks like a "B" written on the face of it

Here's another clearer picture if it helps you identify it. The back definitely looks like some kind of ship now that you mention it.

I found several different Phoenician coins that have the same crown and face pose, but the backs of them are all slightly different. You're definitely spot on with it being something Phoenician.

I am leaning more to Sidon in Phoenicia, similar to these:
https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/search/browse?volume_id=&number=&city_id=787&region_id=&province_id=&subprovince_id=&reign_id=&date_min=&date_max=&obverse_inscription_simplified=&reverse_inscription_simplified=&obverse_design=&reverse_design=galley+Phoenician+inscription&metal_id=&weight_min=&weight_max=&diameter_min=&diameter_max=&format=
(you have to copy and paste the URL, forum software is killing the link  :-\)

But I didn't find an exact match (what is difficult also because the photo here is not very sharp  :-\).

I have been holding of giving a reply due to the poor quality of the photos but it does appear to be a Sidonian issue. I am a little suspicious of the lettering and the fact that i can not find a match.

Could you please remove the coin from its flip and post new images ?

Here you go  ;D

If it wasn't Sidon then it had to be a coin minted in Tyre.
