A rare Septimius Severus denarius...
« on: May 07, 2021, 01:38:16 pm »
yes or no?  ::)

Best regards
Rainer

City Roman IMP II coinages are very rare. The Emperor received the second imperatorial acclamation on the occasion of his victory at Cyzicus around mid-November 193 AD. The TR P II began on 10 December 193 AD. Already in the same month the third imperatorial acclamation on the occasion of the victory in Nikaia took place, since the New Year's medallions on 1 January 194 AD already proclaim IMP III. Thus, the denarius issue with IMP II can be pinned down to a tiny period in mid-December 193 AD.

RIC 29a refers only to a specimen in the L.A. Lawrence Coll.; I could not find another specimen on the net.

cf. https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=4207648 (Victoria to the right; Ex Curtis Clay Coll.)

@Curtis (if you are still reading): To what extent are the denarii between RIC 26 and 29a at all credible, i.e. to be assigned to IMP II?

Also in my gallery:-

Obv:– L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP II, laureate head right
Rev:VICT AVG TR P II COS II P P, Victory walking right, holding wreath in right hand, palm in left
Minted in Rome. A.D. 194
Reference:– BMCRE -. RIC -. RSC 690b (citing Gnecchi Coll., Rome)

Additional information courtesy of Curtis Clay:-
"I know a couple of other specimens too, BM probably has one from me and I may have another in my new collection.

Still very rare and interesting, IMP II generally rare on Rome-mint denarii, a muled obv.-rev. combination because COS II means after 1 Jan. 194, but the medallions prove that Septimius' IMP III must have already been known in Rome by about 25 Dec. 193."

Since we are on the topic, another example of an IMP II but with Virtus on reverse.

Rainer,

Of the four IMP II Rome mint denarii of Septimius listed by RIC,

RIC 26, GENIVS P R does not exist, but is just a misreading of BM 59, pl. 6.19, as stated in a footnote in the revised edition of BMC V, "the last two digits are blurred", so it's an IMP IIII.

The other three do exist:

RIC 27, LIBERAL AVG COS, citing L.A. Lawrence collection. That Lawrence coin is now in BM. Another was in the Eauze hoard, no. 75, pl. 9, and I have three further specimens in my new collection.

RIC 27A, LIBERO PATRI, citing Cahn, 15 Oct. 1929, lot 671, and also BM 60, pl. 6.20 = RIC pl. 5.9. BMC new ed. casts doubt on the IMP II reading on their coin; the same type occurs also with IMP III and IIII. However, I have plaster casts of three examples which clearly read IMP II: in Budapest, Vienna, and ANS.

RIC 29A, VICT AVG TR P II COS II P P advancing l., citing L.A. Lawrence coll. That Lawrence coin is now in BM, you and Martin show additional examples above, and I have two in my new collection.

Four more types that exist, but are not in RIC:

As RIC 29A, but Victory advancing right. Martin shows his specimen above, the BM has one from my first collection, I have two more in my new collection, and another is in Naples.

The Virtus standing type, shown by Lerian above. Other spec. are in Oxford, Walker Bequest, ex Lanz 42, 1987, lot 585; and two in my new coll.

SAEC FRVGIF COS, African god standing. Rupert showed such a denarius in Forum in Dec. 2008, acquired a couple of years earlier. Since then I have added two spec. to my new collection.

VICT AVG TR P COS, advancing left. A spec. is in the coll. of the Göttweig Monastery in Austria, RSC cites one reported in the BMC first ed. from a British hoard, and I acquired a spec. some years ago from a Münzzentrum Rheinland sale, lot 679.

I added a NumisWiki page - Septimius Severus IMP II.

It needs more photos!

I am not sure if anything can be gained by another example of Martin's example already shown - but if it helps

Without having other examples to compare with and the slight damage on the flan in the crucial area I have tentatively assigned this example
to the IMP II series.

In hand its very convincing, better than the photo suggests.

Perhaps Curtis could compare with his casts?

In my opinion, it is IMP II.

I only have these three.  Unfortunately the Liber has a flaw on the II.

Lerian,

Correct reading still uncertain, since I don't find that obv. die among my casts.
