The
style, I think, is rather too
good for an
imitative. My own guess would be that perhaps the engraver unconsciously slipped into thinking in Greek, though
still writing in Latin script, of course. The Greek root mnē- covers the family of words including ‘remember’ (mnēmoneuō, mimnēskomai), ‘memorial’ (mnēmosynon), ‘remembrance’ (anamnē
sis), etc. Or maybe he
had just
had a late night, and turned up for
work half asleep.
