Athenian Owl - real or fake / help needed
« on: March 24, 2023, 11:11:10 am »
The subject tells it all!

I inherited this coin, brought it to some local dealers that tell me it's a fake. Weight: 16.99, diameter around 25, thickness around 6.

And last but not least: thanks to this AMAZING forum for all the INVALUABLE help all these years!

Any help appreciated  +++ :)

The style is not right for a real owl.

Hm I see. What kind of pictures could I provide? Closer ones or with more details of the surface?

It’s interesting because even as a fake I cannot really put it in one of the fake owl categories/types that already exist.

Your help is greatly appreciated!

I think Peter (Enodia) is kidding around!

Definitely fake, sorry.

I am not sure what you mean.

If you mean what type of genuine era/variety it copies, I don't think there is a good answer. It isn't an accurate copy of any type

If you mean is it struck or cast. I think it is either pressed or struck with modern dies.

Thanks for your reply. I meant if there are any info about the origin of this kind of fake, country that it might come from or any other info (date maybe) or provenance!

I always see the most amazing Athenian Owls in the FORVM shop. They always seem to fly off the shelves like hot cakes.
