Hello everyone.

Today I have three new additions to show, one provincial bronze, and two denarii, each one scarce if not rare.

First is an AE21 of Domitian (RPC 687) probably struck in Prusias ad Hypium (Bithynia) with a nice temple reverse; it's uncertain whether the coin depicts the Rome Capitolium or a local building.

Strangely enough, both the denarii are missing in David's gallery.

Vespasian RIC 1477 (° mint series) was completely overlooked and shares the obverse die with the Paris example and with my RIC 1475.

Titus RIC 31 has a nice left portrait.

Kind regards

Alberto

It's rare that I come across a Vespasian or Titus denarius not in my collection - you just posted two! Needless to say very good additions.

The coins where in the same auction, I've been surprised too!

Best

Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Three scarce sestertii added

Hello everyone.

Peace is a well known and common reverse for Flavian bronze coinage, usually depicted as a female figure, standing with cornucopiae and olive branch.

In a much scarcer type, only on sestertii, Peace is shown in the attitude of setting fire to a pile of arms.

Vespasian's version is more detailed, Domitian's one has more similarities with the ordinary type.

Today I've added three of these coins to my gallery:

Vespasian RIC 241: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-100111

Domitian RIC 284: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-100112

Domitian RIC 364: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-100113

Kind regards

Alberto

Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Three Aequitas middle bronzes added
« Reply #58 on: August 13, 2013, 08:54:33 am »
Hello everyone.

Today I've added three coins struck under Vespasian with Aequitas on reverse.

This was a very popular type under Vespasian and Titus, while Domitian abandoned it, preferring Moneta.

Vespasian RIC 286

Titus RIC 441 (no active corrosion, despite of the green-blue spots)

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-100440

Domitian RIC 665 (worn reverse but nice juvenile portrait)

Hi Alberto,

I commented prior to seeing your post.

I would observe these coins carefully because
they look awfully like BD.

Love those portraits though.

Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Six coins added, Spes reverse
« Reply #60 on: August 20, 2013, 08:47:39 am »
Hello everyone.

SPES was a popular reverse during the reigns of Vespasian and Titus, being widely struck mostly on AE coins.

Only one issue in precious metal (gold and silver) was minted for Domitian Caesar under his father.

Today I've added to my gallery a few coins with this reverse, four struck under Vespasian and two under Titus:

RIC  894 Vespasian As            https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-100838

RIC 1273 Titus As                    https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-100837

RIC  787 Domitian Aureus        https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-100840

RIC  788 Domitian Denarius     https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-100839

RIC  349 Domitian Dupondius  https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-100836

RIC  511 Domitian Sestertius   https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-100841

Hello everyone,

I'm very proud of my last additions, since these coins come from a collection so illustrious as that of Harry Sneh.

They are two scarce coins, both struck during the reign of Vespasian:

- Vespasian denarius RIC 42 with sacrifical implements on reverse and a nice early portrait

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-101210

- Titus dupondius RIC 909 with Felicitas on reverse; it has good reliefs and a pleasant patina

Hello everyone.

Today I've added three dupondii to my gallery

Vespasian RIC 581 with Felicitas on reverse

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-101291

Domitian RIC V 832 same reverse (dupondii in the name of Domitian as Caesar under Vespasian have laureate - not radiate - head, but bust is always draped)

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-101290

Domitian RIC 479 with Fortuna on reverse, a common and worn coin, yet showing a brilliant emerald patina

Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Alexandrian AE of Domitian
« Reply #66 on: September 03, 2013, 09:13:30 am »
Hello everyone,

Alexandrian AE coinage of Domitian is clearly divided in two periods.

In the first nine years of reign the style is rough, while starting from year 10 a great improvement can be observed.

Dattari (Appunti di Numismatica Alessandrina p. 9), noting that the style of the portrait became almost identical to that of the mint of Rome, came to assume that the coins were minted in Rome precisely.

I've added to my gallery a few examples.

Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Added two rare 84 AD Domitian denarii
« Reply #67 on: September 05, 2013, 09:19:04 am »
Hello everyone.

Domitian denarii struck in year 84 are all rare, without exceptions.

Since I've been recently able to add a second spec to my collection, I decided adding both to my gallery.

The last one has lesser wear, but some graffiti on it.

Kind regards

Alberto

Hello everyone,

today I've updated my gallery with a new and rare denarius of Domitian, struck in 85 AD, one of the best year for his coinage.

I've also taken a new shot of a cistophorus.

Kind regards

Alberto

« Reply #69 on: September 18, 2013, 09:07:55 am »
Hello everyone.

Today I've been very happy receiving a coin I've been hunting for many months.

It's an early Antiochian silver issue, bearing the portraits of Vespasian and Titus.

The coin was in the personal collection of Michel Prieur and is a plate coin in his "The Syro-Phoenician Tetradrachms".

Kind regards

Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Two Domitian Didrachms added
« Reply #70 on: September 25, 2013, 02:04:12 pm »
Hello everyone.

During the reign of Domitian the mint of Rome struck a variety of silver coins meant to circulate in the eastern provinces.

They had legends either in Latin (Cistophori for Asia Minor) or Greek (Drachms for Lycia and Didrachms for Cappadocia).

Today I've added two didrachms, struck in the thirteenth year of his reign (93-94).

These coins are in perfect roman style, just heavier and thicker than contemporary denarii.

Kind regards

Alberto

Hello everyone.

Today I've added four juvenile denarii of Domitian.

The first belongs to the first silver issue under Vespasian

The second was struck under Titus

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-102409
