Macedonia Philip II

Hi,

I have this coin as
Macedonia - Philip II   359-336 BC   
AE 17
Head of Apollo, hair bound with tainia
FILIPPOU Naked youth on prancing horse (J below)   

I am struggling to get a more precise ID as I cannot find a reference with a J below. Is that a J?

Although I am unsure what the control mark symbol is it is certainly not a "J" because that letter does not exist in the Greek alphabet. The symbol possibly isn't even a letter at all. I am sorry that I cannot help further but maybe one of our other members will chip in.

In Alfred Bellinger, "Philippi in Macedonia", Museum Notes (American Numismatic Society), Vol. 11 (1964), pp. 29-52, you find on page 42 as number 60 a specimen with a mirrored E which is probably the sign on your coin:

I thought that the symbol on Palves' coin looked different but looking at the "ANS" coins perhaps that is what it is.
