L VERVS - sestertius
« on: March 05, 2007, 07:27:45 pm »
Hi to all

I have identified this sestertius RIC 1397 -ob. L  AVREL VERVS AVG ARMENIACVS - rev. TRP IIII IMP II COS II       VIC/AVG on shield.
But I still have doubts. I ask confirmation.
Thank in advance

Yours is either RIC 1396 or 1397. Both have the same reverse, but the obverse descriptions vary slightly.  1396 is described as "Bust r., laureate" while 1397 is "Head r., laureate".  Wildwinds says yours is 1396 (like the description and photos below), but I think is it a mistake since your coin and the Wildwinds example seem like "Head r."  instead of the head and shoulders "Bust r." description. I think your attribution is correct and Wildwinds is wrong.

Lucius Verus Æ Sestertius. 164 AD. L AVREL VERVS AVG ARMENIACVS, laureate head right / TR P IIII IMP II COS II S-C, Victory standing right, placing a shield inscribed VIC/AVG in two lines on palm. Cohen 249, RIC 1396.   (To me this should be RIC 1397 description like your coin)

Best, Noah
