Caracalla Limes Denarius?
« on: March 04, 2007, 04:34:49 pm »
Hi to all!

I am working on one coin that came in a batch of Provincial issues.  It is bronze, 18 mm.  No doubt that it is Caracalla - the legend is ANTONINVS PIVS AUG in Roman letters... portrait of a young CaracallaReverse: Not too clear, looks like a figure standing left, right hand extended (holding something?) - left hand possibly holding cornucopia - possibsly a seated captive on right side. Part of the reverse legend is still available to read -

I can see COS at end; the other letters are definitely Roman.

I have not found a match on Wildwinds for a SILVER coin of this type yet.  Would this be a Limes Denarius?  And... did they have their own unique designs?

I cannot post a scan - the portrait is high off the surface, so I cannot get a clear scan...also some corrosion.
I have been reading about Limes Denarii - and it would be interesting to have one!

Hi dpaul7!

For limes denarii the time of your coin is right. Most of them are from Severian times. Often they put together obv. and rev. from different issues, sometimes from older times. So it is often impossible to find a coin in silver with the same obv. and rev.

Best regards
