Odd Augustus Fantasy Piece
« on: December 11, 2007, 02:43:37 pm »
Hi-- Has anyone seen anything like this before? No, I'm not suggesting it's ancient, although I have been known to find imitations under every rock. The Spanish seller very clearly labeled it as a fantasy, so no one is trying to con anyone. It's so strange though, and so unlike any genuine prototype, that I find it rather appealing and mysterious. Why might this have been made-- jewelry maybe?

An odd indeed.  I can make out caesar avg on the obverse legend but what's the name of the "emperor".  I had to laugh at the sad-faced dolphin   ;D

Ha! It DOES look like a kangaroo, or maybe a llama lying down and looking to the right! You made my day with that one.

The reverse seems inspired by RPC 209.

Does anyone know what they were trying to do with the obverse legend? You can clearly make out CAESAR AVG on one side but the other? It looks kinda like TR P POT IS, but that would be gibberish.

TR POT is 'tribunicia potestate', which should be followed by a number.

It reads CAESAR AVG TRIB POTES, a legend that occurs at Emerita, and is close to many others of course.

IMP AVGVSTVS TRIB POTES XX showed up as the obverse legend on RPC 320; SNG Cop.  549, I think its a pretty rare legend though.

Sorry... I don't understand the relevance?

The first thing that came to my mind was where did the Romans get a roo?

You probably know those eye / brain tests, like:

- Do you see two faces or a cup here?
- Do you see the old or the young woman in the picture?

Now here's another one of these: Do you see a dolphin or a kangaroo on this coin?
