Poll

Would you clean these?

No!! Stop!! Vandal!!
Probably not.
Maybe if I was bored.
Yes, hesitantly.
Of course! Why wouldn't I?

Would you clean these coins?

No? Tough.. I'm going to anyway. Sure, conventional wisdom says: "They look fine. Leave them as they are."
But I think they can look better. What do you think?

The answer I would choose is 'yes, if I could'.

Finished (more or less) with two of the coins.. will finish off the third when I get back from work at the end of the week.
They didn't come out quite as well as I'd hoped, but never mind.
Anyway, here they are:

Perhaps it's just the photos, but I would have guessed that the Diocletian you cleaned had more silvering on it than it turned out to have. Nice coins!

Thanks guys!

No secret to the cleaning - just plain lemon juice and a soft nylon brush to remove the deposits, followed by a dose of deller's to darken the tone. I only use lemon juice on coins that I know have a thin patina, as when this is the case the metal below is almost always of excellent quality and detail.

Yes, the Diocletian did have some silvering on it, but not as much as I thought it might. Unfortunately, since I [ahem] sort of forgot.. to protect the silvering before applying the deller's it turned rather dark. The picture doesn't help either. I may try to buff it back to a shine at a later date.

Ave!

Trajan...well done!

Back in the day when I was D&D Dungeon Master, we had a term for playing the game. IE "No Guts, No Glory!"

In the case of your coins you had the "guts" to further clean them, and them came out to "Glory."

Kudos!
