Unknown - 9th Century Byzantine Seal?

(1/1)

lv88:
Uncertain seal, about 26mm - not sure what it is

iolkia:
Hello,

Can you post some better pics?

A wild guess (yes, just a guess) would be:

ΚΥΡΙΕ ΒΟΗΘ[Η]
ΤΟΝ ΔΟΥ
ΛΟΝ COΥ ΜI
ΧΑΗΛ

ΤΑΓΜ[Α]
ΤΟΦΥΛΑ
ΚΑΝ T [...]
APOK [...]

Actually, I see a Π rather than a Γ but I have no idea what else the title could be.

I suppose the last word is the family name. Perhaps Apokapes?

Maybe Gert has a more solid answer.

Best regards,
Iolkia

Gert:
Yes, well read Iolkia. Hard to reconstruct. I don't think there are missing letters to the right of the reverse & I assume Kyrie was contracted.

For the personal name I see only M for certain. Can be M[IX]AHL, but perhaps MHNA (Menas?)

I also read APOK, so perhaps indeed Apokapes, possibly Apokaukos - or yet another name Apok...

Not many tagmatophylax's around, so I'll have a look if I can find a published parallel. Otherwise, I am afraid we'll not be able to improve on Iolkia's suggestions.
