Silphion Plant Rediscovered?

Virgil H:
This may be old news, but just ran across this 2022 article that possibly a descendant of the ancient silphion plant was found in Turkey.

Meepzorp:
Hi VH,

That's interesting. I hope it really is silphium.

The article explains that it resists cultivation. This may explain it went (almost?) extinct.

Take a look at "The Silphium Plant" https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=53925.msg335391#msg335391

Best regards

Virgil H:
Meepzorp,
Yes, I always assumed it was a cultivated plant, but perhaps it was wild harvested and maybe over harvested. Interesting for sure.

Jochen,
Thanks for that link, I am heading there now to look.

Virgil H:
Jochen,
That is a fascinating and well written post and thread. I guess I was right about wild harvesting. I recommend that thread to anyone interested in the plant. Again, thanks for the link.

Virgil
