Ring Money? Proto-Money? Something else?

Dear Friends,

I picked up this item in a group lot, purporting to be a piece of silver "ring money".

I know *nothing* about these at all, and wondered whether anyone recognised
whether it was in fact "ring money", and and where I might find a reference for it.

Weight is 3.82g, diameter is about 15mm. Appears to be silver, and helical in shape;
(due to which I jokingly called it an "Ancient key-ring"!). Can you help?
