Unsightly Encrustation on Severus Denari
« on: July 07, 2023, 09:28:08 pm »
I’m not sure if I’m dealing with an iron deposit or copper. I’m sure the reverse is copper.

I’ve read through so many threads and just can’t find this exact thing. It’s hard hard. Though I can scratch it with a pin head.

So should I use lemon juice, citric acid, ammonia, thiosulfate??

I feel like I got a huge deal at under $25 on an auction because no one wanted to deal with this in the middle of his face. It would be so nice without that.

Any help would be appreciated!

So, on the obverse it looks like I can see some orange color, unless it is just a reflection.  If so, there is a possibility you have a fourree (silver plated, ancient counterfeit).  In which case you need to be very careful.  Maybe just spot treating the corrosion without soaking the whole coin.  It could just be a big pit under there.  Hopefully some others will weigh in with advice, but you could also just leave it as is.  It is part of the history of the coin and it actually looks pretty nice!  Good luck!

Regards, Jimi

Thank you, Jimi! I see the orange on the rim. Fortunately it was just bad lighting. It’s all silver. I couldn’t help but fiddle with it under the stereo scope with lemon and a scalpel. I think I got it where I can live with it. Didn’t try to mess with the back.
