Gallienus - Samosate ?
« on: May 24, 2023, 12:51:42 am »
Hello

Is it Ric 449 from Samosate ?, OCRE defines the mint as Asia ? whether there are two types 449a, 449c , but no pictures , can you see examples of these variants anywhere?

Göbl lists this coin to Samosata issue 3, MIR 36 #1701g.

Thank you  Pekka K
the seller gave references 1701m, I have also seen with other lowercase letters eg 1701b, what do these lowercase letters - variants mean?

Lower case letters are used in this case both for obverse differencies
and for reverse field mark. On your coin there is no reverse field
mark, so the letter can be f, g, h, i or k. But Göbl lists only "g"
in this group  for Gallienus ("i" is for Salonina).
Letter "m" is for Gallienus with dotted wreath field mark on reverse,
so it is not right.

Göbl knows only 3 coins of this type.

One of our rules here is that you provide ALL the information you have available. Having a reference from the seller seems quite relevant. Do not hold back relevant information when asking for an ID assist.

It was not my intention to hide the description of the seller's references, but to verify them, because in my opinion they were contradictory, and I did not want to suggest an identifying one.
The coin has not yet arrived, its weight from the seller's description - 3.81 g
I think that in terms of references given from sellers - it could be argued whether they are valid and legitimate before verifying the id. ;)

Ps. Pekka thanks again for the id. verification and explanation of the meaning of the lowercase letters

Well then, ask your questions someplace else where they follow your rules.
