Nice and rare coin for Postumus


Postumus. Romano-Gallic Emperor, AD 260-269.
Antoninianus, Trier, 268
20,5 mm - 3.30 g.
POSTVMVS AVG, radiate bust left, wearing lionskin around shoulders and carrying club over right shoulder
R/ IOVI STATORI, Jupiter standing facing, head right, holding sceptre and thunderbolt.
AGK 38b (r2); RIC V 310; Cunetio -.

Fabulous, allusion to Hercules. I have the Pax reverse from this issue. Love it. Do you know any provenance? The flan shape looks familiar, sure I've seen this up for sale in the past.

If I recognise the background in the  photo correctly the dealer's son collected antoniniani and is now selling his collection I believe.

The portraits on the coinage of Postumus are among the last to show real insight into the character of their subject in the late ancient world.

The portrait on your example from Trier gb29400 is one of the very best I've seen on an ant of that period.

Added to that, the coin is in excellent condition, so I think you did very well indeed to pick it up.
