Approximate age of pendant (better pics)
« on: July 29, 2017, 03:05:56 pm »
Found this pendant in northern italy.
18mm tall and 14mm wide at its widest point.  Patina is black.

Really can't make much out of the iconography.  Two figures on one side.  Jesus or a saint and a walking man on the other?

Any idea of age and what is actually depicted would be very helpful.  Thanks.

Hi,
for the front I would say Virgin Mary holding infant Jesus and lily, the back probably depicts St. Christopher holding staff and carrying Jesus.
I am not sure about the age, but my guess would be early modern period.

Interesting how crude it is.  Poorly cast and there are still signs of flashing along the edges.  Maybe it was made locally for some small shrine or pilgrimage site.

Your local comment gave me an idea Shawn...

Perhaps its not St. Christopher...maybe St. Anthony of Padua holding the infant Jesus.
