Title: Germania Capta!
Post by: David Atherton on March 19, 2020, 12:04:51 am: Last year I purchased a rare variant of Domitian's Germania Capta sesterii. It's a decent coin but quite worn. I've always wanted a better example of this iconic Flavian type (i.e. one in which the legends can be read in full) and finally made good on that wish last week. https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-161439

The coin came slabbed and I was very eager to crack it out!

It's not in the gallery, yet I've just checked it and it could be from the same obverse die.

Thanks Alberto, but this is my second example of the type. I previously acquired the much rarer variant RIC 397.

I hope you are doing well over there in Italy.

So far I have 4 issues out of the six listed in RIC, just missing 525 and 632. The latest would be very hard to get since is R3.

I'm fine here, thanks.

Most of the time I'm locked indoors or in my garden, as required by the containment measures.

I only miss my grandchildren very much.

i am digging up this tread hoping to reach germania capta sestertius fans! Yesterday I won an auction lot which includes a nice exemplar of germania capta sestertius. Identifying it more closely back at home, i noticed that the legend is different than all exemplar visible on the web. Mine has a cos xiiii legend which corresponds to ric.632. I have not found yet any other ric.632 coin on the web. Any of you has one for reference?

RIC 632 is rated R3 which means only one specimen was known to the author. O for Ashmoleon Museum, University of Oxford collection.
