Postumus (Double?)-Sestertius modern or ancient cast?
« on: December 02, 2013, 05:50:58 pm »
Hello,

this (double-?) Sestertius of  Postumus reached me today and I wonder now for hours well whether it is an ancient barbarous
Cast (remarkable the "M" into account of P M  ) or a modern cast ?

Obv: Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Postumus right,  IMP C M CASS LAT PO (STVMVS PF) AVG

Rev: P M TR P COS II P P S C, Virtus standing left, holding globe and scepter

Weight 13,26 g, diameter 29 mm

Anyone who can give me a hint ?

Thanks in advance

Best regards

Aulus

No reason why it isn't ancient - there are large numbers of contemporary cast copies of Postumus' large bronzes. This looks fine to me - and some of these are very crude indeed. A nice find

Nor can I see anything wrong. I would suggest the raised element on the last photo is the remains of the casting sprue.

Hello,

thank you very much for replies. So  I put the coin in order as authentic of time, cast and of a wild style . By the way ,the patina cannot be removed with acetone.

Best regards
