Hello everyone.

Having seen the coin added by Nemonater to his gallery, I decide to post mine, which seems to share the obverse die.

Kind regards

Alberto

Hello everyone,

today I've received in the mail some Flavian rarity.

The first coin is an early Vespasian denarius, struck somewhere in Spain.

This coin was highly valued in old catalogs: Cohen 100 Golden Francs vs 2 for common types (1880), R.S.C. 240 GBP vs 50 for common types (1979).

At present there are much less specialist collectors looking for rarities, so price is much lower.

Kind regards

The Province of Cilicia was created by Vespasian in AD 72: Cilicia Pedias was formerly part of Syria, Cilicia Tracheia was part of the Kingdom of Commagene.

Coins form Cilicia Tracheia in the Flavian era are quite scarcer than those of Cilicia Pedias.

Here are two rare types from Anemurium (Titus) and Soli- Pompeiopolis (Domitian).

Last three coins to show.

The most significant is a very rare early As of Titus as Augustus, struck in the very beginning of this reign.

RIC 70 is missing in all the major collections and it's not pictured in RIC.

I've added also another Titus As and a scarce Vespasian from Apamea.

Kind regards

Alberto

Hello everyone,

today I've added two rare Domitian denarii belonging to the third issue of year 85.

First is a Minerva (M2), second is a Germania; the latter is unfortunately damaged (hammered?)

Kind regards

Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Two Titus Alexandria Tetradrachms added
« Reply #81 on: October 17, 2013, 10:18:29 am »
Hello everyone,

today I've added to my gallery two Alexandria tetradrachms struck during the short reign of Titus.

No bronze coins were struck in Egypt in the name of Titus, only billon tetradrachms.

They are of course much scarcer than those of Vespasian, but to my eyes they show a better style too.

The first one, with Omonoia (Concordia) on reverse is better preserved, but I like very much also the Nile portrait and the toning on the other one.

Kind regards

Hello everyone.

Today I've added my first brockage, with a nice incuse portrait of Titus.

Unfortunately it's very difficult to take a good picture because of its patina, the coin itself is much better in hand.

I've already got a regular example in my collection that I'm posting for comparison.

Kind regards

Hello everyone.

In the Flavian coinage left portraits are usually scarcer than the right ones.

Yet there are exceptions, like some Titus sestertii as Augustus and the denarii of Vespasian with modius on reverse.

Today I've finally received the right portrait one, and I'm adding both to my galleries.

As a curiosity I will show here an unusual tooled denarius: in this worn example of Vespasian RIC 980, the obverse has been reworked to become a Domitian.

Kind regards

Alberto

That's a very successful tooling job, if Domitian really started as Vespasian!

Are you sure it's not actually an ancient forgery with hybrid type combination?

Well, I've purchased the coin some ten years ago considering as a mule.

No sign of plating, despite the low weight of the coin. Also the style of the portrait and the lettering are crude.

So I started considering tooling as a possibility, but I can't be sure and I value your judgment.

Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Domitian PONT denarius added

Hello everyone.

Today I've added to my gallery the two coins (Didrachm and Sestertius) that I've showed in today's Domitian birthday thread, plus a very rare early denarius.

The PONT (Pontifex) title is found only in some few early denarii, struck before he acquired the title of Pontifex Maximus (P M).

Kind regards

Alberto

Hello everyone.

Too much time was passed by since I've got my last sestertius; today I've finally received a new one: a scarce coin struck under Vespasian, with Pax on reverse.

I've also got two middle bronzes of Vespasian; the dupondius is a very rare one (not pictured in RIC) and has a nice patina.

Kind regards

That Didrachm is a work of art, thanks for posting it.  I don't actively collect the coins of Domitian but, between you and David posting such beauties, they're getting harder for me to resist!

Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Laureate Dupondii for Syria
« Reply #91 on: November 05, 2013, 12:32:06 pm »
Hello everyone,

today I've received some interesting coins, that I'm going to post here.

The first one is a very rare laureate dupondius of Titus as Caesar.

This coin belongs to a small issue of 74 A D of brass coins with laureate heads and without S C on reverse; that's the reason why Gnecchi, 100 years ago, included them in his book about Roman medallions.

In past years this issue it's been assigned to various mints such as Samosata in Commagene and Antiochia in Syria. According to the current opinion, due to style and die axis, they were struck in Rome for circulation in Syria.

I've also added to my gallery three other coins of the same issue: two Vespasian and one Domitian. The left portrait was my first Vespasian purchase (in 1985) and is still one of my favorites.

Kind regards

Alberto

Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Domitian sestertii from Thrace
« Reply #93 on: November 06, 2013, 05:13:46 pm »
Hello everyone.

After the death of Vespasian, all the peripherals mints still active (Lugdunum, Antiochia ad Orontem, Ephesus) ceased to struck imperial coins.

The only one exception was a mysterious oriental mint (which is now believed to be located in Thrace, maybe in Perinthus) who issued  a small series of coins in Orichalcum (sestertii and dupondii) during the reign of Titus and in the first two years of the reign of Domitian.

Their reverse replicated some subjects of the coinage of Vespasian, including, on sestertii, Mars in heroic nudity.

The last edition of RIC lists two varieties struck under Titus for Domitian as Caesar: 509 and 510.

The only difference between them is in the obverse legend: 509 has DOMITIANVS while 510 has the shorter DOMITIAN. RPC regroups them all under # 505.

RIC rates both coins R2; actually 509 is no more really rare (many specimen can be found online), while 510 is still very hard to find.

I've just added one spec to my collection.

Kind regards

Alberto

Hello everyone.

I heartly agree with David Atherton when he says that 88 A.D. was the best year for Domitian coinage.

When it comes to denarii, I have a special feeling for legend across fild on reverse and the full title GERMANICVS on obverse.

Therefore I've been very pleased to get this very rare RIC 564, in great condition.

In the meantime I've started a new album dedicated to ancient forgeries. It starts with a very rare imitation of RIC 563 of the same issue.

Kind regards

Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Padouan Sestertius of Domitia

Hello everyone.

Imperial bronzes of Domitia are extremely rare, I've never seen one on sale in many years of collecting.

I found a nice substitute with this "Padouan" (after Giovanni Cavino aka Padovanino, an italian medallist who lived in 16th century, whose best known works are his imitations of Roman large-brass coins and medallions).

The real coin was valued 1500 Golden Francs by Henry Cohen in his 19th century catalogue of Roman Coins.

Hello everyone.

My last acquisition is the very first coin of this subject: the dupondius RIC 297 belongs to the first issue of 85 A D.

Between 85 and 86 were struck 5 dupondii and 3 asses sharing this reverse; I have now 5 of them in my collection, missing 3 dupondii.

Today I've added two coins of Vespasian with Victory on reverse.

It's a very popular subject, struck all along the reign of both Vespasian and Titus.

Re: Flavian gallery restarted - Domitia & Domitian - two scarce provincials
« Reply #99 on: November 18, 2013, 07:47:29 am »
Hello everyone,

today I've added to nice and scarce provincials.

The coin of Domitia is from the rare city of Domitianopolis Sala in Lydia, the only one I know that was renamed after Domitian.

The coin of Domitian is another variant of RPC 709: obverse legend is the same cited (no picture though) in the S2 Supplement.

I've forwarded it to Michel Amandry; he's working on the S3 Supplement that should be completed by the end of March.

Kind regards

Alberto
