You know, I have a couple of
plated Hadrians I bought recently that I've been meaning to photograph and post here. When I got the first one, I thought it looked strange. Mirror-smooth fields, very thin plating with breaks exposing mostly un-corroded copper. I thought the
fabric of the coin etc seemed "off" and suspected it to be modern. A few weeks later I saw one with a matching
reverse die (although it wasn't as pin-sharp) so I bought it to compare the two (it was inexpensive). I certainly think they are a
bit odd. I wouldn't go so far as call myself an "expert" but I do have over 100
plated coins so I have somewhat of a feel for what seems normal to me. Your
Trajan reminds me a
bit of those Hadrians, although I can't tell from that photo if they are as similar as I suspect.
Here are photos of the 2nd one, which looks slightly less odd than the first. I'll have to post pics of the original when I am
home from
work. Seeing the two together makes them look worse. My opinion is that I don't know for certain that they are modern but I definitely won't buy
plated coins with these characteristics again at any
price.
