Probus, Calliope
« on: September 12, 2011, 05:18:39 pm »
I noticed this coin come up for sale on a well known auction site.
It purports to be an unpublished CALLIOPE AVG type, which is a type known from Siscia. I believe to to be a modified "TEMPOR FELICI, Felicitas standing right, holding caduceus and cornucopiae" from Lugdunum. The obverse is certainly Lugdunum and there are odd areas on the reverse where what I believe to have been the long caduceus and cornucopia to have been.
Other opinions?
Regards,
Martin

Hi,

reminds me of this fantasy tooled from an original coin, which just has been withdrawn from auction.

Everything you said Martin seems right on. We have discussed the rare calliope before, I was fascinated by this type the first time I saw it.
