Elagabalus with Demeter reverse
« on: February 21, 2006, 04:46:31 pm »
I have two to share today and am requesting references.

AUT K M AURHLIOC ANTWNEINOS
Bust laureate, draped, cuirassed, right, seen from behind
UP IOUL ANT SELEUKOU MARKIANOPO / LITWN in ex.
Demeter standing facing, head left, holding grain and long torch.
Cannot find this combination with online references.

AMNG 819, described as holding "poppy-head and two ears (of grain)"
(+ Schleier = veil, Fackel=torch)

Steve

P.S. Have you noticed your transcriptions here have gone to pot? Nevertheless, I get what was intended!

Sorry, I haven't quite figured out how to get the correct Greek letters, will keep trying.  There is another nice example of this obverse die in the Members Gallery but a different reverse.
