Greek Coins Discussion Forum / Re: Lysimachus authentication help
« Last post by Luke C2 on Yesterday at 05:20:39 pm »
Hi, I can see the rules suggest not using a title such as authentication - my mistake. But I do suspect this coin to be fake, or I would not be asking for a second opinion. I have included a photo of a similar coin which raised my suspicions. I'm sorry if I didn't word my post correctly, but I believe it's within the rules to be asking for someone to help confirm my suspicions?

There is no right place on this discussion to post asking for confirmation of authenticity.

Greek Coins Discussion Forum / Berenike II with seleucid countermark?
« Last post by Robert on Yesterday at 05:06:41 pm »
Hi!
I acquired for the collection an interesting coin with a Seleucid contermark-anchor, judging by the reverse, remnants of the legend and the visible outline of the obverse - I'm betting that it is a medium Berenike II bronze (21 mm, 8,2 g.)
Have you ever encountered such a contermark on Berenike coins?
Could it be the countermark of Antiochus III?
I would appreciate for reply.

Greek Coins Discussion Forum / Lysimachus authentication help
« Last post by Luke C2 on Yesterday at 03:59:05 pm »
Hi, think I posted in the wrong place before. Just reposting here.
I'm looking for help authenticating this Lysimachus tetradrachm (the first image). I've included a very similar (possible die match) tetradrachm from a CNG auction a few years ago. There is a die crack in the same place on the face, and there is some loss of detail on the coin in question compared to the CNG example. This is the best photo I could get, but can try and include more if it's helpful. The weight is 16.85g with a diameter of 32 mm at the widest. What do people think?

Well, back then spelling was not standardized. The engraver of the dies was likely illiterate. That is partially why I find such coins charming. I am a retired teacher, and I've learned to decipher the writing of little children as they learn to read and spell.

As to not being under stood in England - I too have had such an experience in Durham. A young sailor from The Royal Navy asked me something I did not understand, so I said "Pardon me?"  To which he replied in perfect English, "Oh, a foreigner."  I then told him I was thinking the same about him. We both had a good laugh at this.

Yes! Thank you, Sorin.
