Septimius Severus Monet Laodicea
« on: July 30, 2022, 07:02:18 am »
I have a couple of queries for the Severan Eastern mint specialists regarding a new purchase.

On the obverse legend it looks to read PER and not PERT. Is this PER legend known for this type or is that the T is not struck clearly?

The reverse reading of MONE - again is the T not struck up or is the T on the nose/face of Moneta, there is something there and i can't tell if its meant to be the T?

Lastly, what is underneath the cornucopiae?

Barbarous and not official. The style is simplt too far removed from the official style.

Here are a few official examples from the Eastern IMP VIII mint for comparison

Obv:–L SEPT SEV PE-RT AVG IMP VIII, Laureate head right
Rev:– M-ONET AVG, Moneta standing left, holding scales and cornucopiae
Minted in "Laodicea-ad-Mare". A.D. 196 - 197
Reference:– RIC 484(a) . BMCRE 448-9.

Almost in the style of the IMP II series

More in the style I see more often in the SEVER sub-series

SEVER types

Obv:– L SEPT SEVER PERT - AVG IMP VIII, Laureate head right
Rev:– MONET AVG, Moneta standing left, holding scales and cornucopiae
Minted in Laodicea-ad-Mare. A.D. 196 - 197
Reference:– BMC 448 Note (citing Cohen 332 (no authority cited)). RIC - (cf 484(a) (rated S)). Cohen 332

as above but L SEPT SEVER PERT - AVG IMP VII-I

I have an unofficial example too. Possibly the same reverse die but clearly unofficial.

Regards,
Martin
