Julius Caesar era semis?
« on: May 24, 2023, 11:54:59 pm »
I am confused about the time frame for this coin. It was labeled as being from the time of Julius Caesar and his civil war, but I see conflicting dates on other sites. Some agree with this time, others say it's a century earlier. The observe has the bust of Venus and the reverse shows a winged Eros. The reverse legend says the coin is from Corduba. What does the legend on the observe translate to? It was labeled as CN IVLI L F. Does the first part say Cnaeus(Gnaeus) Juli? Is this a reference to Pompey and Julius Caesar? If not, then who is this referring to? Certainly not Gnaeus Julius Agricola...

In L. Villaronga and J. Benages, "Ancient Coinage of the Iberian Peninsula", Barcelona 2011, these coins are called quadrans and dated to the mid 2nd century BC.
There are different varieties with and without a CN.IVLI.L.F.Q. as part of it. There is no explanation for this legend.

In SNG BN Spain these coins still have been dated to "Mid 1st Cent. B.C.", see e.g. here: http://www.s391106508.websitehome.co.uk/PHP/SNG_PHP/04_03_Reply.php?Series=SNGuk&AccessionNo=0902_1645

So, the dating of these coins has been (or perhaps still is) disputed, the most recent one seems to be that of mid 2nd century BC.

Here is a site in Spanish with some more information and many more examples: https://monedaiberica.org/v1/mint/58

Edit:
There is some more information about this coin series in Luis Amela Valverde, "La ceca de Corduba en época republicana", Actas XII Congreso Nacional de Numismática: Madrid. 25-27 de octubre de 2004, 2006, pp. 177-193:

CN.IVLI.L.F.Q is likely to have been a local citizen, not one of the famous people.
