New coin added to my Roman Republic collection that I just received. It is also a coin with a dog. I still need to correct my entry for the Arados coin previously discussed, I had forgotten.
Roman Republican, Lucius Caesius
112-111 BC. A worn but lovely in hand coin, there is something about a worn silver coin. Plus one with a dog.

Beautiful coin, Virgil. To my eye, wear can actually add to the eye-appeal of a coin.

Nice to keep the dog theme going.

All the best,

Tracy

Thanks Tracey,

I agree, worn coins, especially silver, can be very attractive, I actually like many test cut coins, too. It shows that they were used. I have a worn 1875 German Mark and an old silver US quarter in my "got in change" collection of modern coins, basically these are coins I have picked up while traveling. I think I got the German Mark from change in a drink machine where it had probably been used as a quarter (on a US base in Germany). But, it easily could have been in change from a German store as the Marks were the same or similar sizes. I miss the different country's money, but I guess the Euro did simplify things. When I was stationed in West Germany, a bunch of US silver hit the PX/Bowling Alley/snack bar circuit that turned out to be from a kid who had gotten into his dad's coin collection. I am willing to bet that kid got into trouble. LOL. A lot of it got returned after the word got out, though.

New addition to my Republican AR denarius coins, this one I have had a long time and have decided my photography is at least acceptable enough to post it.

I have quite a few Roman Provincial coins that need to be photographed. I just created this gallery folder. This one was an impulse buy from what I would consider a bargain bin, the price was too good to pass up a dog and Artemis coin. I like it, nice coin in-hand.

The relatively recent return of the Forum Members Auction (at least, it was pretty dormant for a while) has allowed me to grab coins that interest me, but I wouldn't necessarily be seeking out at higher prices or maybe even at all. Here are a few recent ones.

I always have had a thing for Constantinople/Byzantium
Roman Empire, City of Constantinople Commemorative

Total impulse buy, rough but interesting
Chalkis, Euboia, Greece

If I had a huge budget, I would collect Judean coins, as it is, I grab one every once in a while. This is a pretty nice one.
Judaea, Coponius or Marcus Ambibulus, Roman Prefects under Augustus

Just added a couple coins.

First one is another of the same type I purchased a few months ago. I usually won't buy additional of the same type like this, but I love these coins and they are rare, so I couldn't believe when a second one popped up on Forum a month or two after I found the first one.
Kingdom of Paphlagonia, Pylaimenes II/III Euergetes

The next is from a recent lot and is a new variant (thanks to Kamnaskires for help with attribution)

Two more I picked up at the Members Auction.

I don't have many Byzantine coins, I pick up interesting ones from time to time, in this case a later one.
Byzantine Empire, Andronicus III

I really like the Roman campgates, here is one.

Thank you, I love those bull head coins. I posted something about them in the Ancient Coin section.

Thanks,

I've seen both of your beautiful bull coins which are a rare find indeed! The one you acquired from the Forum is especially eye-catching!

I just added two very nice coins from Forum to my gallery. Both of these fit into my collection into slots I actively pursue.

First up is a "naked horseman" from Kassander. One of the few coins I collect duplicates of are Phillip II naked horsemen coins. This one is same general type, different King. I think it is a nice example.

Macedonian Kingdom, Kassander, 319 - 297 BC

Then, there is a common type from a rare mint in Pontos. One person on Forum calls these the Peter Gabriel coins (Enodia, I think?). This is also a nice example.

Chabacta, Pontos, c. 100 - 85 BC

Thanks,
Virgil

"A flower?"
Steve Hackett is touring the entire Genesis 'Foxtrot' album this year for its 50th anniversary, so I'll be thinking about you while sitting in the audience in November! Lol

Both nice coins Virgil. 🙂

I am working through that lot of 10 Elymais coins and here are three more, hopefully accurately identified. All attractive to my eye and a couple new varieties for my collection. Six more to go.

Congrats on the latest group of Elymaeans, Virgil. The VH 17.3.1-2A (anchor/cornucopias reverse) is a particularly good pickup - they don't show up on the market very often. Well done.

Fun stuff for sure. I might have called the Orodes IV a "c-d" rather than "b" due to the vertical line between Artemis' ear and eye, but I won't quibble.

Just added a couple Roman Provincials. I still have problems with where to put these, some are with Greek "city" mint places in my collection, a few I have put in "Roman Provincial" categories. I fear I will never get a system down for these. In any case, here are latest that I have photos for.

This is a fairly rough one from the Member's Auction, it is a type I have wanted and from a mint I am interested in. I like it.
Augustus, Philippi, Macedonia: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=183245

This one from Forum I really like, I like the portrait and it is from a mint of a city I have spent some time in. As far as I know, there are only Roman coins from Aezani, although the city itself is much older. This one is really nice in hand.
