Simon's Gallery
« on: December 21, 2017, 04:26:21 am »
My collection is a very specialized collection of Byzantine tetartera aka Tetarteron . I have spent the last few months cleaning it up , better photos and selecting my best examples. If its ugly its more than likely rare.

It has taken 15 plus years to get this far, nowadays I try to find better examples.

Enjoy and if you see an error please let me know.

Thanks Eric, It was not the religious aspect that got me hooked at first. I was collecting Roman Empresses on coins and at the time the coins became out of my reach financially. I had found a tetarteron in a small hoard and it was an attractive example but I had no idea what it was. By the time I figured it out I was hooked on trying to get them all, when I started they were much cheaper than now. It was also an area that really lacked collectors, a bit easier to find new finds.

Simon,

A very nicely laid out gallery.

Surely to be of great use to anyone seeking to collect these coins.

They look tricky - I would not know where to begin in attributing them!

Simon => that's an awesome gallery (like Peter, I wouldn't know where to start, so I'll just jump right into the deep-end)

I have a coin that is a bit similar to the very last coin in your gallery (I have posted both) ... am I way off of the mark, or is this coin of mine a bit similar to your example?

Awww crap, sorry ... I see that "all" of your coins are TETARTERONs (where my example is a Bi-Trachy) ... ooops, sorry

Hi Steve ,

Your coin is

SB 2393
Andronicus II Palaeologus
AE Trachy
Thessalonica mint

Even though I would agree with you the catalogs do not, my coin is from a little earlier, The Empire of Nicaea.  I  love the flower .

Ironically,  When tetarterons and trachys first came out they did not coexist, Tetartera were used in the west of Greece and Trachea was used in the east , Constantinople is the place where the both circulated. When the city fell to the Latins in the 13th century the eastern city of Nicaea issued tetartera for political reasons and to make the refugees more at home. ,

Peter

Hi Peter,

They are easier than the concaved coins by far, my collection is misleading these are all above average, this coins usually  circulated for long periods of time and are well worn, to find the coins in uncirculated condition is very rare. They were not hoarded either, they are normally found as lost coin finds.

The coins from Alexius I to Alexius III are easier, they have a ruler on one side and a religious symbol or person on the other. After that it can get more complex, the flower coin listed above is still not attributed to any person.

A beautiful example of Alexius s-1923, some wear in Christ's name but the Alexius side is excellent. This is a rarer issue for Alexius as most of the Constantinople issues are.

Been waiting for fed ex for several weeks to finally deliver. I was beginning to think it was lost.  Today they delivered. It was worth they way.

Okay, at first glance this is not that exciting but this coin is the best condition I have seen for this issue, normally they are overstruck and very messy, I have one other in my collection that is very cleanly struck but well worn. I do remember Val complimenting my example because it was uncommon in that condition.

Recently this example and several others have hit the market, the Virgin has detail and some nice relief. I have added it to my main collection.

Maybe someday I will a better but this is the best I have seen.

I hope everyone who celebrates has A Very Merry Christmas!

John III (Magn) S-2119

Nice example I have had for a while, just have not had  the chance to add it to my gallery.

I always see the buttons of the emperor’s robe form the letter close to    "K".

Thank you both!

Sam, i did put up some more information and a comparison shot in the Byzantine section. It becomes clearer with the pics side by side.
