help with attribution - Obol of Athens (or imitation)
« on: May 18, 2015, 04:57:20 pm »
Hi everyone,

The attached image is of an Obol I recently picked up a show.  Neither the ancients dealer nor myself have been able to definitely attribute it.

Wgt: .75g
Dia: 9.5mm

I did look through various references and online for possible eastern imitations without a lot of luck. To me, the obverse resembles some of the drachms at the top Plate 24 of Svoronos, but the style of the reverse is quite different.  I think the round mark on the front of Athena's face is some kind of countermark, but it is hard to tell.

Any help would be most appreciated.

- Terry

Sorry to say, but it looks like a terrible modern cast.
