Dear friends of Nikopolis ad Istrum!
Now I got the 1st copy of Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov, Dezember 2021. It contains altogether 2749 tcoin ypes on 545 pages, all described and depicted b/w. As you know it is the most comprehensive book about the coinage of Nikopolis ad Istrum worldwide. The book can be ordered from me by PM. It is printed on demand. The price is €110.- + shipping. Here I have the statistics oft the last 10 editions:

This table shows the amazing success story of the collaboration with Nina Hristova and Gospodin Jekov. It is a story that is far from over. We owe this not least to the generosity of Mr. Josef Sermarini, who with his Forum Ancient Coins has made this space available to us. It proves how science can be done with this help.
So please see this thread as integral supplement of Nikopolis 2021! In any case the year of the edition should always be added to the reference number, because sometimes the listed numbers have changed!
Thanks
Jochen

A wrong coin of Commodus for Nikopolis
Unfortunately, a coin has crept into the new Nicopolis 2021 eition by mistake, which does not belong to Nicopolis. The following coin is listed under No. 8.10.34.1:
Commodus, AD 177-192
AE 27, 9.64g
struck under governor Caecilius Servilianus
obv. AVT KAI MAR AVRH - KOMODOC
Bust, cuirassed, laureate, r.
rev. HG KAI CERBEILIA NEIKOPOL PROC ICT
Emperor, nude but for chlamys waving behind, on horseback galloping r.,
holding transverse spear (Depicted by Moushmov)
ref. a) AMNG 1236
b) Moushmov 892
I found the original picture at acsearch.com. The description there is:
MOESIA INFERIOR, Nicopolis ad Istrum., Commodus. AD 177-192. Æ (27mm, 9.85 g, 8h). Caecilius Servilianus, hegemon. AVT KAI M AVPH KOMOΔOC, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / HΓ KAI CЄPOVΛIA NЄI[KOΠO], ΛЄITΩN in exergue, Commodus right on horseback, holding spear. RPC IV –; H&J, Nikopolis –; AMNG I –; Mouchmov –; Varbanov –. VF, dark green patina, some roughness.
From the estate of Thomas Bentley Cederlind.
CNG, Electronic Auction 395, Lot 266, 12.4.17
I was puzzled by the fact that the legend in ex. was only ΛЄITΩN without the usual ΠPOC ICTRON at the end, which in itself only occurs on small coins.
Unfortunately, part of the legend is outside of the coin. But present is HΓ KAI CЄPOVΛIA for Caecilius Servilianus. And Servilianus occurs not only on coins from Nicopolis, but also from those of Anchialos, Augusta Traiana, Hadrianopolis, Pautalia, Philippopolis and Topiros. A glance at my list shows that KAI CEROVLIA occurs only in Hadrianopolis, and as KAI CEROVLIANOV.... The NEI has simply been added.
One look at Varbanov II is enough and, voila!, there it is:
Varbanov 3319 corr, p. 272 (cites Jurukova Hadrianopolis, 127).
Yes, even CNG sometimes makes such mistakes!

A new type (or a correction) for Commodus
Commodus, AD 177-192
AE 17, 3.89g, 17.39mm, 210°
obv.: AV M AVRH - KOMODOC
Laureate head r.
rev.: NEIKOPOLI / PROC-I / CTRON
Eros, nude, winged(?), laying on lion's skin l., resting head in
left hand and holding in r. hand arrow(?); before him the torch
ref.: a) not in AMNG
b) not in Varbanov
c) not in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2021):
rev. not listed
obv. e.g. 8.10.14.4
probably unpublished
Pedigree:
ex Gorny&Mosch auction 265, Lot 726
ex coll. Erwin Link
coll. Hoeft
This type is closely related to No. 8.10.14.4. The reverse of No. 8.10.14.4 has been described as Herakles, reclining on lion's skin, his club before. But on this coin it is clear a torch before him. And with the head in his hand he reminds of the Eros coins with turned torch. So it belongs to the type of Eros playing Herakles!

coll. Hoeft
This is now the 57th coin of Tertullus for Severus! This coin has a new obv. die and a new rev. legend variant! The rev. seems to be identical with Caracalla No. 8.18.14.2 although the depicted coin is a bit misstruck. It is another example for a parallel issue of menbers of the imperial family. The rev. legend of Caracalla should be corrected!

-
Dear Tom!
We had a lengthy discussion in 2012 about this strange obv. type and whether it was Geta or Caracalla. We had been discussing L KEP and the like until Curtis said that because it is a laureate bust it should be Caracalla as young Augustus. Then the most appropriate solution would be A KE M. I then adopted this. I have a total of 3 more copies.
With kind regards

Jochen,
Could this coin be from the same rev. die as the one in your Nicopolis 2012, p. 390, last coin on page?
There described as Apollo the Lizard Slayer, but our specimen seems to show Dionysus emptying cup and holding thyrsus. Deities with crossed legs seem to be unusual for Elagabalus at Nicopolis.
Maybe you have found other specimens since 2012?

I hope the pictures appear this time

Dear Curtis!
Thank you for your post. You are right. No. 8.26.7.12, last coin on p. 1i0, is not Apollo Sauroktonos, but Dionysos. The coin shown is in such poor condition that this error has always slipped through until now. Not only the description is wrong but also the legends. The rev is the same as No. 8.26.7-8, but the obv. is new.
Your coin is already listed under HrHJ (2021) 8.26.8.25. It is in my collection under https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=153953
I have now received the source code of the catalogue from Mrs. Marinova, daughter of Gospodin Jekov, and am preparing a new edition which will also be dedicated to the memory of Nina Hristova and Gospodin Jekov. Since I first have to familiarise myself with it, it will take some time. I hope, however, that I will be able to finish it this year. Until then, any mistakes I discover should be corrected.
Best regards
