Hadrian RESTITVTORI GALLIAE denarius
« on: April 03, 2012, 01:40:24 am »
I've been comparing an example of a Hadrian GALLIAE denarius currently up for bids on eBay with a known fake.  You can see the coin below (white background).  I stitched it together the image with a fake from my collection (black background) and I'm convinced they share the exact same reverse.  The busts of Hadrian are clearly different but compare the figures on the reverse in relationship to one another, the folds of their gowns, positions of their feet and limbs, and especially the lettering and they seem to match.  I thought I would post the pictures here to get some other opinions.  I am curious to read what you think.

Here is a link to the Wildwinds website showing authentic examples of the Galliae type:

I agree that the rev. dies appear to be the same.

Yet the second coin looks authentic. If that is correct, then the Lipanoff fake must be derived from another authentic coin struck from that same rev. die.

That would explain why the style of the Lipanoff fakes is often very convincing: they were mechanically copied from authentic dies!
