Interesting Marcus Aurelius sestertius
« on: February 25, 2010, 03:15:38 pm »
My local dealer 'never has anything for me' did not apply this week. Among other cheap coins, I picked up this sestertius with a pretty nice portrait of Aurelius:
M ANTONINVS AVG TR P XXVII, laureate head right   IMP VI - COS III   SC in ex   ;Jupiter seated left, holding victory and scepter. RIC 1064, BMC 1437, both citing Cohen 248.
The reverse has a peculiar phenomenon: there seems to be an ordinary double strike, but the lines behind Jupiter's chair are incuse! Cos III seems to read COS IIIII, which is again in favor of a double strike, but there is no trace of the 'second' exergue.
Could there be an overstruck older coin?
Any opinions welcome.

He's just a small-time local cigar smoking man, mostly selling Dutch coins; he sometimes stumbles on some Romans like this one, which I bought for 20 dollars. He's not on the web, nor on the phone(!!).
I will post another coin he had, with an unrecorded text (Licinius).

What a satisfaction when you find a rare coin, or a courious coin, for a few money, maybe from an extemporate  seller :)
