Septimius Severus, INVICTO IMP TROPA..

I haven't had much to shout about in terms of coin purchases recently.

I thought that this one was worth sharing for those who make note of such things.

Septimius Severus denarius
Obv:– IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG COS II, Laureate head right
Rev:– INVICTO IMP TROPA , Trophy with captured arms below
Minted in Emesa, A.D. 194 – 195
References:– RIC -, RSC -, BMCRE -

It is a shortening of the INVICTO IMP TROPAEA (or TROPAEA II) reverse legends before the normal INVICTO IMP that was quite common on the COS II issues.

I have two similar coins, both from the same rev. die as yours but different obv. dies. One came from Spink's Kelly Sale in 1997, the other from Dionysos, eBay, 16 Jan. 2015.

It's interesting to see yet a third early obv. die coupled with that rev. die; apparently the obv. die was in a worn state when used for your coin. For clarity of the rev. details, I would say your spec. is the best of the three.
