repurposed box for coin storage/display
« on: October 09, 2016, 09:09:40 am »
Thought I would share a little project that I made from an old candy box I found at a sale.
I lined it with velvet and made two trays with each holding 40 coins.  When the two trays are in the closed box it securely holds the coins in place.
I enjoy making things like this.

Thanks for all your kind words.  Unfortunately or fortunately depending on who you ask I am addicted to ancient coins so I will have to find more boxes.

Those nice - wood boxes , give coins ( specially the bronze ) a nice and rich color.

I hope you never stop filling boxes   +++

The ship on the original box is nice too!

How did you make and attach those dividers that separate each coin from the others?

I have an old cabinet with 20 small trays, but without depressions or dividers to keep the coins and tickets from sliding around, so hardly usable in its present state!

I had some balsa (may be bass wood) wood sheets 1/16" x 3" x 24 inches long that were scored every 1/4 inch so you could make strips the width you needed. I used 1/2 inch strips.  I marked them out for the size of the small squares and with scissors made notches half way thru the strips.  Then by laying the strips running right to left with the notches up and the strips front to back with notches down to make a grid. The wood on the perimeter was not notched.  I then used a very small spot of glue on each joint  ( I used shoe goo, love that stuff)  once it was dry, just a few minutes I again applied small dots of glue at regular intervals on the top of the grid and then turned it over onto  the tray and held it down with a book until dry.
The sticker on the back of the sheets say MIDWEST micro cut select.
