Kolejny przykład na to, że w muzeach też można wykopać coś nowego. Medalion Licyniusza znaleziony w Bibliothèque nationale de France.



Nie odnotowuje go ani RIC VI, ani RIC VII, ani Gnecchi.

Na rewersie bardzo częsty motyw na tego typu medalionach:

Trzy Monety z wagami i rogami obfitości.

W odcinku znak menniczy (co rzadkie na medalionach): SMHT, czyli Heraklea

Wybity nie wcześniej niż w 312 roku. Wtedy dodano do znaku menniczego HT (Heraclea Tracica) SM (Sacra Moneta) i mógł ten medalion zostać wybity właśnie z tej okazji. Ale biorąc pod uwagę formę tytulatury i zwłaszcza typ popiersia został wybity prawdopodobnie później, po pokonaniu w połowie 313 roku Maksymina Dai, gdy Heraklea - czasowo zajęta przez Maksymina - znów przeszła we władanie Licyniusza.

Interesting! I'm not aware of any other bronze medallions for Licinius.

The obverse legend definitely helps date it. This shorter "LICIN LICINIVS" legend was only introduced at Heraclea on the eagle+victriola type of 313 (same time as the ~3.4g reduction). Before that he'd been using the longer "LICINIAN LICINIVS".

By 315 AD the mint had dropped the "SM", so this seems to date to 313-314 AD.

Of course MONETA AVGG is the most common bronze medallion type, but normally from Rome. Still, it's definitely tempting to associate this with Licinius's regaining control of the Heraclea mint after Maximinus's brief posession of it in 313 AD.

There is another Licinius' medallion in BnF (listed in Gnecchi, II, p. 133, no. 1). Consular bust, IOVI CONSERVATORI on rev. (Licinius' type, with eagle, but Jupiter is holding thunderbolt, not Victoriola).

What are you searching for to find these ? If I search for "licinius" I'm mostly getting republican coins, and nothing for Licinius I.

I see they also have this one for Lucinius Fils. The military theme reminds me of the "Virtvs Militvm" AE3 for him issued by Constantine from Thessalonica.

These two medallions are listed in RIC VII: ROME 63 (Licinius II) and ROME 64 (Licinius I).
