Septimius Caesarea drachm
« on: June 06, 2009, 05:28:10 pm »
I'm not familiar with drachm, but I now that the date of issue is at the reverse with  :Greek_epsilon: :Greek_Tau: something.
but in my case, what is the date? R is not a greek letter!
Thank you for your help!

In Latin inscriptions on Roman coins issued in Greek speaking regions, (or, better, mints that usually produced coins with Greek legends), the letter B is sometimes rendered as R.  Although this coin has Greek legends, a reverse mixup seems to take place.  For instance, Sydenham 393 (a differrent reverse type) gives the date as ET R, presumably for ET B, or 194AD.  Cheers, George Spradling
