Severus Alexander unpublished Antiochia (?) Type ...?
« on: May 09, 2022, 12:31:09 pm »
Severus Alexander
20mm, 2.9gramm
Av: IMP C M AVR SEV ALEXAND AVG
Rv: IOVI CONSERVATORI

If it were Rome, it would be RIC IV Severus Alexander 141c - but with the head and the eyes (!) it is Antioch resp. an eastern mint?! But I find only Rome with the denarius type. Or am I missing something?

Thank you very much for searching!

RIC's list of Eastern denarii of Severus Alexander in unfortunately very incomplete.

I have in my collection three such Eastern IOVI CONSERVATORI denarii, one with bust draped and cuirassed like yours, but with the second R in rev. legend backwards; second draped only, error AVP for AVR in obv. legend; third also draped only, without legend errors.

Ok... so its "only" RIC unpublished - but not generally.
So ist an RIC problem... but not automatic rare. Ok - thanks. Understand.

I can't think of any comprehensive book or article.

Daniel Schaad's publication of the Eauze hoard (1992) is very useful for the study of all Roman silver coins from Septimius Severus to Valerian and Gallienus, though it doesn't have much to contribute about the Eastern denarii of Severus Alexander: 33 such coins illustrated on pl. 31-33, and some changes to BMC's arrangement and chronology of the Eastern types proposed on pp. 157-158.

Ah ok thats fine, thanks for that. Severus Alexander isnt very Important for me. More Septimius Severus to Elagabal. So i will take a look of that. Fine. Thanks!

So my question here will be solved :)

RIC's list of Eastern denarii of Severus Alexander in unfortunately very incomplete.

Our fellow-member Lech catalogued 5878 unlisted types and varieties in his NOT IN RIC site until now…

NotInRIC only covers RIC Volume VI & VII. If it covered the other volumes then that number would be much much larger.
