Macrinus Match - I'm assuming a fake
« on: November 20, 2021, 06:53:32 pm »
Had this in my collection for awhile, but I'm really not interested in provincials so I never gave it much thought. Today, I think I found a match for sale on eBay and therefore, I'm assuming this is a fake. In fact, I'm thinking a lot of this sellers coins are fakes.
Macrinus AD 217-218, AE17 of Nikopolis ad Istrum.
AVT KM OPELLI CEVH MAKRINOC, laureate head right.
NIKOPOLITWN PROC ICTR, Harpokrates, naked, standing left, holding cornucopiae and raising right hand to his mouth.

Looks like they came out of the same casting mold.

Good (though I'm sure dissapointing) find. I suspect both coins are fake.

One may be the “mother,” from which the mold was made. Hard to tell from the pictures.

One of a bunch of cast coins with similar surfaces from the same seller.
