Help needed to identify provincial coin
« on: February 28, 2021, 06:37:05 am »
Dear Board,

I have here a piece that I haven't managed to identify. No refernce available to me has been helpful with this one.
My first thought was that it is from Caesarea Maritima, but the reverse legend is completely different, but I'm confidient that the coin is from the eastern Mediterranean. Coins like this are somewhat outside of my knowledge.

I have placed the letters I'm unsure about in parenthesis.

What I can read of the obverse legend looks like Greek written with Latin letters, laureate bust right:

(ON)EINOS

The reverse shows SPQR in a wreath, held up by an eagle ( like on Ceasarea Maritima coins ),
The legend that I can read is

(A)CVOITIM(K)AVOIS

diameter: 22 mm

weight: 3.7 g

Any information is appreciated !

Clueless

Just an idea:

There are coins from Caesarea Maritima which look quite "barbarized":

https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=347041

On this coin minted under Macrinus the reverse legend is COL PRIMA FL AVG CAESAR and different from the usual one:

If you compare the letters on your coin with these, then there is a certain resemblance. Perhaps there was an illiterate die engraver at work  :-\.

Regards

Thank you, that's a very good suggestion.

I'll label it for now as "barbarized Ceasarea Maritima"  :)

All such coins that I did find seem to be for Severus Alexander, so mine might be for Elagabalus on basis of what I can read on the obverse.

Clueless

Now somewhat less clueless
