Title: Severus AE17 Nikopolis Dionysos holding rhyton
Post by: mauseus on October 19, 2021, 02:16:13 pm
Hi,

My Hristova and Jekov volume is the 2009 edition and woefully out of date. I've looked through the update posts on FORVM but haven''t been able to locate this AE17mm of Severus from Nikopolis. The reverse shows, I think, Dionysos holding a rhyton, rather than a bunch of grapes or kantharos above a panther and the thrysos is ungarlanded. Could anyone confirm a reference for it please?

Regards,

Hello mauseus!

This type with the drinking-horn is listed in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2020) under 8.14.8.24. In my collection it is https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=117328

Another type is known with an obverse with AV - C. https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=56549

There are some additional notes.

Best regards
Jochen

As I know Mr., Jekov will publish the next edition in spring 2022. I think it is worth to wait for it. If the time is coming I will post it in Nikopolis Addenda.
