Numismatics in the time of tsars - Numismatical Societies
In 1888 the first numismatical society was founded in Moskow (MNG). The
members were famous collectors and scientists - colleagues of the Academy of Science, Institute of Archaeology and several museums - like A.V.Oreschnikow (1855-1933), F.I.Prove (1872-1934), I.I.Gornung (1827-1905), S.I.Tschizshov (1870-1921),
Ch.Ch.Giel (1837-1908), Baron W.G.Tiesenhausen (1825-1902), N.M.Turbin (1850-1913) und Prince I.I.Tolstoi (1856-1916). By their
work they gave the Russian
numismatics its direction.
In 1911 St.Petersburg followed with an own numismatical society.
The activities of the MNG were
numismatics and archaeology. It supported scientifical enquiries, held discussions and numismatical exhibitions and published beside its research results a kind of Annual (2 volumes 1911-1913). Since 1898 the meetings of the MNG
members took place in the Historical Museum, were the
library and the
collection of coins, medals and other stuff of the MNG were placed.
The MNG was not big, in March 1915 there were 107
members, which exclusively were devoted to scientific research and collecting coins and were not disposed to allow commerce. About 44
members lived in Moskow, some in other countries.
Similar numismatical associations existed in other Russian cities, but their activities were not so important as the MNG. In 1914 by instigation of the MNG the Russian Numismatical Society was founded which should unify all local societies to one all-Russian organisation. But that remains an attempt only - after 2 years the RNG was disbanded (1).
His full name was
Christian Christianovich Giel. He was one of the most influential numismatists of
his era (2).
