Herakles and (patera or apples?)
« on: September 06, 2008, 11:49:29 am »
Hi,

I have this Macrinus / Diadumenian 5 assaria with a reverse die I have not encountered before.

Unfortunately the right hand is worn.  I think this is Herakles holding a patera, but it just could be apples.  I'm almost certain in fact it is a patera - but it can be best not to completely assume)  Does anyone else have this reverse die?

An additional couple of examples shows, again. a nude Herakles with patera, and one with the apples - just for comparasions

Antvwala today posted this on the italian board, but the device is not perfectly clear on this specimen as well.

Thanks Luigi,

I missed that post.  It certainly strengthens the patera option though.

Best regards

Tacchella RN 1903, pg 211, #38, plate XII, fig4. shows an example from the same dies, worn a bit like Bacchus'. He calls it a patera with a ?. The example posted by Luigi seems to be the best example, though as he notes not as clear as one would like - I think I would go with patera.

We have actually discussed this type before:

With the overarm club, Herakles generally seems to hold pateras.

-- So much for generalizations; the same overarm-club type at Hadrianopolis (all for Gordian III, it appears) generally deploys apples not pateras.
