Some time back I noticed that Nathan wanted a list like this. I had made this one up and, although it would not be complete and some of the persons are only "alluded to", have found it to be handy:

No Protestant would assume that Maccabees was in 'the Bible', and 99.9% of them have never heard of it. So I assume you're from either a Catholic or an Orthodox background, Coldavo?

That's interesting, because I had no idea that Maccabees wasn't in the Protestant bible (I'm Catholic), and when I grabbed a bible from the stacks today and it didn't have it I was like "where the heck is Maccabees?"

I suggest to use the widest possible definition of the Bible for the purpose. If I stick to assumptions based on my background, the whole list all but disappears.

Aarmale - no problem at all in using on the sticky thread.

Robert - my religion is "coin collector" and, to get the maximum names available I used the "Jerusalem Bible" which is a collection of most of the Bibles. You will note that, in my original post, I used the word "Bibles".

I'm glad that it is of some use.

Great list, thanks for putting it together.

Makes sense to me to use the most expansive definition possible.  I'm assuming Mr. Brenchley is of a Christian background because there are books besides Maccabees on the list that people with a Jewish background would omit as well

I was raised Protestant, and like your 99.9%, I had never heard of Maccabees until I started delving into the history of the Bible.  Sad, but true.

Thanks for the list, I really appreciate it.  It would have taken a long time for me to do.
I am a (17 year old) Protestant, and I never realized that so many people have not heard of Maccabees!  Wow, although I have never read it I have been familiar with the contents for a long time.  Time for a trip to the library, I will have read it this summer.
